The GardenThe garden at Tavern Rocks was overgrown when it was purchased at the end of 2002. A number of interesting plants had been introduced to the garden by previous owners, including a fine specimen of Cornus capitata. Sadly, many of these were struggling to thrive because of overplanting and poor terracing of what was a very steep garden. We decided to undertake major structural work to create distinct levels as well as resiting a number of the original specimens. St Mawes has a very kind, mild micro-climate. This has lended itself to introducing a range of new plants that can take advantage of this such as Agave celsii, Dasylirion acrotrichum, Grevillea rosmarinifolia and Lampranthus. Seed was taken from the Echium pinniana that flowered in 2003 (everywhere!) and selective replanting was done in the Autumn of 2004 after the new planting had been allowed to settle in. At the top of the garden there is a new hardwood deck, with stunning views out to sea, the headland and beyond, as well as a newly refurbished summer house.
